I will never forget when he turned to look at me. I instantly regretted ever looking out that damn window.
As a teenager, I wasn’t much different than most. Hated school, loved video games, and loved most anything that would piss off my parents. One of those things was the combination of staying up late and playing video games. Most nights wouldn’t be over until 2 or 3 in the morning. Sometimes I had purple circles under my eyes and my friends would jokingly call me the Undertaker, like the wrestler.
Anyways, this all started during one of my late night bingers. I was up late playing a game when I suddenly had to pee. I walked to my bathroom, which had a window that I could see to the street and the street lights in front of my parent’s house. They had a two story house so my view was a bit elevated. After I washed my hands I reached over to grab a towel to dry them and I, out of habit, looked out of my window. I typically would keep the blinds up. Most of the time I never saw anything on the outside except for the occasional wildlife scurrying by, running from some unseen attacker. I now see the irony in that statement.
Nothing was out of the ordinary on this night. It was a bit windy but nothing more. As I was putting the towel down I began to turn to walk back to my room when I saw something out of my periphery. I saw a person walking. It was like I couldn’t move at all. I just stood there for what felt like hours. The figure was walking at a slow pace as if there was nowhere to be in any kind of hurry. I came to and realized I was easily noticeable with the light on so I shut it off. Once I turned around I saw the figure take another step or two and then stop. My eyes widened and my heart began to pulse a little faster. Quickly, the figure turned in my direction and I think it pointed at me. I’m not sure because as soon as I saw it turn I ducked down.
My heart was racing but I told myself that there was no way I could be seen because the light was off. I stood up and when I did I saw the figure walking briskly towards my house. It felt like he was walking right to me as if we were long lost brothers or something. When I saw this, I immediately pulled the blinds down and started backing up to head to my room. Just then I heard a loud BANG! It sounded like a door slamming. I rushed to my room in a panic but as quiet as possible because I didn’t want to wake my parents. I shut my door and turned off the lights in my room and shut off the tv as well. I started trying to make sense of this situation when I heard another loud bang and this time it was louder and sounded like it was closer than before. I looked outside of my window and I saw the figure staring back at me with a fiendish smile on its face.
What the hell is going on, I thought to myself.
Then the banging started coming from all over. There had to be more than one of them. I began to reach for the phone but then I heard a loud voice say “DO AND YOU’RE DEAD!!” I looked back outside and he was just stand there, still, not moving but with that same fiendish smile. In an instant he leapt forward and burst through my window, knocking me backwards. The loud banging noises intensified as he approached me. I began screaming for help and before I knew it he hand his hand around my throat. I was lifted into the air with ease and I could feel the life being choked out of me. It whispered in my ear “What’re you lookin at?”
Again it asked,” What’re you lookin at?” And then “Aren’t ya glad we could meet like this?”
Before I knew it my door swung open and I fell to the ground. My father burst into my room asking me what the hell is going on. I tried to regain my breath so I could speak and tell him what happened. I tried to warn him of the broken window but when I finally came to I saw there was no broken window, no broken glass to worry about.
“What the hell is going on in here? WHAT’S all that noise?!” he asked/shouted.
I didn’t want him to think I was crazy so I just said I tripped over a shoe and that was the loud bang he heard. After a few more apologies he finally went back to his room. I sat in disbelief. Did I just imagine all of this? I looked at my mirror to see if I was bleeding or anything and I could see a redness around my neck from where I was being choked. Then I heard that same, sick, voice ask “What’re you lookin at?”
I regret ever looking out that damn window.
